Natural Allergy Relief
Pollen is merely the tip of your allergy-provoking iceberg. Everyday we are bombarded by numerous substances that tax our body's detoxification and immune system. Volatile chemicals, cigarette smoke, gasoline fumes, laundry detergents, household cleaners and furniture polish are, to name, but a few. Allergy relief is hard to achieve for many people today.
The drinking water quality, the water we cook with, bathe in and use for cleaning, is chlorinated and fluoridated. Our vegetables and fruits (not organic) are grown with fertilizers and contain liberal doses of pesticides. Many of these toxic chemicals are contained in our animal products along with steroids, hormones, ammonia, and antibiotics. Many prepared foods contain dyes, preservatives and additives; names we can not even pronounce.
AN OVER BURDENED IMMUNE SYSTEM
Our body must detoxify and eliminate everything harmful, that we ingest. We overload our immune system and underfuel it, skimping on fresh fruits and vegetables, and rewarding ourselves by choosing to fill up on sugars, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. We do not realize that many outside sources, burden our body's immune system as well. Just the task of household cleaning affects our body. Inhaling molds, dust, pet dander, and chemical fumes from household cleaners, give us runny noses; itchy, watery eyes, constant sneezing and headaches; and we haven?t even left the house.
SOME TIPS FOR ALLERGY RELIEF
- Wash your hands frequently with warm water and antibacterial cleanser. When ever you reach out and touch someone or something, you pick up bacteria and germs.
- Use natural cleaners, health and beauty aids. There are many excellent environmentally safe, cruelty free laundry and dish soaps, furniture polishes, glass cleaners, degreasers and abrasive scrubs. Natural antiseptic agents such as lavender, citrus, and tea tree, do a wonderful job, and their fresh scents are less likely to give you a runny nose or headaches. Hypoallergenic natural cosmetics and personal grooming products from toothpaste to shampoo do not contain artificial colorings, fragrances and petrochemicals that impose on your detoxification and immune system.
- Eat Organic. These fruits and vegetables contain significantly lower levels of heavy metal pollutants and higher levels of essential minerals. More of what you need, less of what you do not need. There are many "green" stores continually opening in your neighborhood, and as well, many large food chains generally have a "natural health" section.
- Eliminate food allergies. The top food intolerances are dairy products, wheat (bread, cereal, cookies, cake, pastry), eggs, peanuts and other nuts, shellfish, oranges and strawberries. Improper digestion of these foods leak from the gut into the bloodstream causing an allergic reaction.
- Eat onions and garlic. They are members of the allium family, that contain several substances that inhibit the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and these can offer some allergy relief.
- Install water filters for kitchen sinks and showerheads. Constant exposure to volatile toxic chemicals is one of the reasons - especially in the spring, that our immune system breaks down. Chlorinating water may kill the bacteria, however, it is after all, chlorinated bleach we are drinking. In a lot of cities people are drinking somebody else?s sewage from upstream, so to speak. We are inhaling these chemicals even when taking a shower in a confined stall.
- Breathe easy. Put a HEPA filter in the bedroom, home office or any other room you live in. There are many airtight buildings that are energy efficient and that results in re-circulated air, containing particles and gases. Dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, mildew, fungus and pollens penetrate deeply into our lung tissue, provoking a runny nose, watery eyes, recurring headaches, lethargy and even snoring. There are up to 500 gases emitted from cleaning solutions, carpets, building materials (formaldehyde toxicity), pressed wood furniture and flooring. Other indoor pollutants such as acetone, ammonia benzene, fiberglass, lead and nitrogen are just a few that cause itching in the eyes, ears and throat. HEPA traps all these particles and gases. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) filters were developed by the Atomic Energy Commission during WWII to remove radioactive dust from their plant exhaust. They are now the primary filtration systems for surgical theaters, bioengineering, and pharmaceutical processing.
- Steam clean carpets and draperies every six months and eliminate hiding places for dust, mold, fungus, bacteria, and pollen.
- Use hypoallergenic mattress covers, pillows and sheets. Bedding made from Ventflex, is a special hypoallergenic synthetic material. Do not use polyester coverings as they contain harsh chemicals. Switch to 100% cotton. Run your washing machine through an extra rinse cycle to get rid of any traces of detergents.
NATURAL REMEDIES FOR ALLERGY RELIEF
- A good quality multi-vitamin.

- Quercetin - a bioflavonoid, stops allergies, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and a potent natural antihistamine.
- Omega-3 fatty acids - your body will use these to produce non-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
- Magnesium - is Nature?s very own bronchodilator, it relaxes the bronchial muscles and prevents over reaction to allergic stimuli. It also has a calming, soothing effect on the body (200-400mg./day).
