Neurons and nerve cells
The basic unit of nervous system is the neuron or nerve cell. A nerve is one or more bundles (fasciculi) of fibers; each fasciculus contains microscopic nerve fibers, each enclosed in a neurolemmal sheath. The nervous system is an extensive network. It is the body's control panel. It conducts information that controls, regulates and coordinates; by way of impulses all functions of the entire body. The nerve impulses communicate to your muscles and organs as to how to respond to the environment.
There are three parts of the nervous system that have to work together:
- Central nervous system (CNS): The brain and spinal cord are the key components of the central nervous system. They relay nerve impulses and analyzes incoming information from the sense organs. The which tell your brain about things you see, hear, smell, taste and feel.
- Peripheral nervous system (PNS): Contains all the nerves that are not located in the central nervous system. The PNS consists of 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves that branch off from the brain and the spinal cord The peripheral nervous system is the conduit that carries the nerve impulses from the central nervous system to the other locations in the body.
- Autonomic nervous system: Heart beat and indigestion are regulated by this part of the nervous system.
Central Nerve Disorders
Some central nerve disorders can be cause by: stroke, multiple sclerosis, tumors , epilepsy, brain or spinal cord trauma or Parkinson's disease.
Some peripheral nerve disorders can be hereditary, others can be cause by a simple sport injury. The sport related injury is called "burners" or "stingers" which is usually an injury of the nerve(s) between the neck and shoulder.
Other peripheral nerves may be damaged through medical conditions as diabetes or auto-immune diseases as rheumatoid arthritis. Some can occur from alcoholism or a vitamin deficiency. Peripheral Nerves have the remarkable ability to regenerate themselves, some may even respond positively to gene therapy.
Eat healthy, take proper vitamins, minerals and supplements, avoid alcohol, quit smoking and exercise. Massage is a good way to improve circulation and avoid applying prolonged pressure to nerve points. |
